Quick facts on basal metabolism and BMR calculator

Basal metabolism is the minimum amount of energy that a person should consume when doing nothing but resting. Basal metabolism is in charge of keeping your body functioning normally. This means that if you spend the whole day in bed you will expend about the same amount of calories than your basal metabolism figure.

Basal metabolism is influenced by many factors.

The primary factors are:

  • gender (men have a higher basal metabolism, women have lower);
  • Age (young people have a higher basal metabolism, older have lower);
  • height (taller people have a higher basal metabolism, shorter have lower);
  • weight (people with higher weight have a higher basal metabolism, leaner people have lower basal metabolism)

Secondary factors are:

  • body temperature (people who have an infection or fever have a higher basal metabolism);
  • Development (pregnant women and babies have a higher basal metabolism);
  • body shape (those with more muscle mass have a higher basal metabolism, people out of shape have generally lower basal metabolism);
  • outdoor temperature (high or low outside temperature will increase basal metabolism);
  • Stress and anxiety (both will increase basal metabolism);
  • poor diet (lowers basal metabolism);
